Michigan is the only state in the US that touches four of the five Great Lakes and has the longest freshwater coastline in the US, at 3,288 miles.
The Michigan flag consists of an elk and a moose that are derived from the Hudson’s Bay Company coat of arms, and depict great animals of Michigan. As well as a bald eagle that represents the United States, which formed the state of Michigan from the Northwest Territory. The flag also features three Latin mottos; “pluribus unum”: “One out of many”, a motto of the United States, “Tuebor”: “I will defend”, referring to Michigan’s frontier position, and “Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice”: “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.“
